Some things we know about Mary to give us a little bit of background and context, are that her actual name was Miriam.. Apparently a popular name in Biblical days…. She was Jew, she was young- probably around 13/14 years old. She lived a pretty normal life but would have been from an equivalent ‘working class’ family in those days. She was a

virgin and was engaged to marry Joseph- a carpenter. She was pretty ordinary.

Luke 1 v 42 and 45 TPT (Elizabeth talking)

‘Mary! You are a woman given the highest favour and privilege above all others for your child is designed to bring God great delight…. Great favour rests upon you, for you have believed every word spoken to you from the Lord’

That single supernatural moment changed her normality!

Despite this being a young girl who lived thousands of years ago in a completely different culture to us here - we can learn so much from the courageous woman she was

and became. It was written all those years ago yet God still actively speaks through it to us today. Firstly……Mary was favoured, favoured by God. She was CHOSEN.

Chosen means to pick out something or someone, as being the best or most appropriate…. Or someone who is the object of choice or of divine favour. The great news is… God chooses you too. God sees our potential when others won’t see it or we don’t feel it.

Mary might not have felt favoured when that angel first came to her or maybe wished God had chosen someone else - in fact it says Mary was deeply troubled. This was a

massive deal, not just because she was going to be carrying and birthing the Son of God but because at the time how would she explain this to the people around her. Falling pregnant outside of marriage- risking her life- she could have lost everything, as could Joseph. Would people have really believed her. Would people believe her?

She could have been stoned to death or separated from her family.

We can look at her life and think what an honour it was to be chosen to be the mother of Jesus, her calling also required great suffering- she didn’t lose her life but I

guarantee there were many things she sacrificed. Motherhood brings with it so many blessings but even in a marriage, even if it was planned or long hoped for, it’s not

always an easy road, and she was a 13 year old girl with many of her own aspirations and desires for life.

The favour of God comes often with a cost. There's no promise it will be easy.

But thankfully that scripture reminds us that God is with Mary. He doesn’t just choose her and leave her to it. Just the same as he is with us. He never leaves us or abandons us.

Mary’s obedience became a blessing for all of humanity. Mary said yes because her faith was found in the One who promises to be with us along the way. The God who goes

before.

The God that called Mary, He hasn’t changed, He’s the same as he was all those years ago.

1 Peter 2 v 9 TPT

But you are God’s chosen treasure- priests who are kings, a spiritual ‘nation’ set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvellous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world. The creator of the universe, the one who put the stars in the sky, who made the oceans, he chooses you. Over and over again, he would choose you. He sent his son, Jesus to die for us, so we would live with him forever.

God sees everything about you- the good, the bag, the ugly, the stuff that happens in secret- yet he loves us and favours us. Be encouraged that God sees your potential and wants to use you to do great things. Be obedient because it comes with blessings.
