Hello and welcome to our first live Sunday morning service
We have live comment section on here so let us know what’s going on with you. And as it’s Mother’s Day following this video we have a prayer from Janet. Stay tuned.
We have been talking recently about the power of our words and bringing words of LIFE to those who need it.
Jesus said even if we gather in twos or threes He is with us in Spirit. I sure that the Spirit of God is not contained and able to be with us in many different locations at the same time.
Also you can still donate to the work of the lighthouse online, we will leave a link in the comments.
We know when we come into the presence of God and we begin to speak faith filled words things change,
this morning i have a short message on
How Worship is key to our spiritual formation. beginning in John 4
Words can have incredible power in shaping us, but we also are being spiritually formed by what or whom we worship.
To worship is to declare who in our lives is of highest worth or value
Spiritual formation is about what we are becoming
Recap from where we began in Psalm 42 last week
As a deer thirsts for streams of water, so I thirst for you, God. I thirst for the living God. When can I go to meet with him? Day and night, my tears have been my food.
People are always saying, “Where is your God?” When I remember these things, I speak with a broken heart. I used to walk with the crowd and lead them to God’s Temple with songs of praise.
Why am I so sad? Why am I so upset? I should put my hope in God and keep praising him, my Saviour”
Psalms 42:1-5 NCV
The psalmist said I speak with a broken heart as I used to be the one leading others in prayer and praise and now I’m sad and upset, he thirst and is suffering
But I know, he says, what I should be doing. I should be the one who encourages others i should keep praising and put my hope in my saviour.
Words have power and I know we can speak these words of life.
Whilst we can’t meet in person you can praise in your own home in your own words.
In our text this morning in John 4 continuing the theme of being thirsty this time Jesus is resting
Christ is thirsty and asks for a drink from the women at the well in Samaria, then He asked her to get her husband, instead of ridicule, he restores her and gives her hope.
For us today we have the same hope that we can come to God though Jesus Christ and drink from the living water.
John 4. 23 and 24
Jesus begins a teaching about spiritual worship linking this with our relationship with God. Just as God is spirit we too are spiritual beings.
Few would disagree that we are complex beings, and we are more than a sum of our natural physical being.
Humans were created to be a spiritual and physical beings.
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.
The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23, 24 NLT)
As we are spiritual beings we worship God in a spiritual way. But more than that the way we worship has to be genuine.
Quick Background to our story.
Jesus is on a mission here, led by the Spirit he had to go through Samaria.
Perhaps most Jews would have walked around Samaria adding days to their journey. But Jesus we know was looking for opportunities to reveal the Father God he was looking for those whose hearts are open and he had to go through Samaria.
For Jesus it was being about the fathers business,
God the father is seeking worshipers, those who will believe in him and those who want to know him and make him known.
Genesis 2 tells us
.. the Lord God formed the human being from the dust of the ground.
He breathed in the breath of life and the human became a living person. (Genesis 2:7)
The word breathe and Spirit are the same word.
Which suggests that as human beings whilst made from earth they are filled with the Spirit
we're meant to live in both the spiritual realm and the earthly realm.
meant to live in a place where heaven and earth meet.
This is the sweet spot
As Christians we are seated together with Christ in heavenly places yet we are the body of Christ here on earth.
We understand the role of Christ in our faith is about connecting us to the kingdom of God and for us to bring this kingdom to Earth.
As christ ascended in glory he gave his Spirit to us. (john 7)
and with this Spirit we have the power of God to be his witness. (Acts 2)
We pray for the kingdom to come on earth and the will of God to be the same here as in heaven.
It's not like we are asking Jesus to come and do everything for us. No we, through the Holy Spirit indwelling have the ability of God in us to do what Jesus did.
His ministry was always to bring us into relationship with the Father through the Spirit.
It is by that spiritual connection that we do what we do for God.
Paul wrote to Corinth stating
Now we did not receive the spirit of the world, but we received the Spirit that is from God so that we can know all that God has given us. (1 Corinthians 2:12 NCV)
When Jesus ascended to heaven left he did not leave us helpless but sent the Spirit to dwell in us.
The Spirit of God dwelling in us connects us to the Father and are being spiritually formed
Worship involves speaking
There is a worship that expresses the heart, and worship that involves the mind, and a worship that involves the body.
There is a worship that is giving praise upward,
There is a worship that is receiving instructions from above
There is a worship that carries out instruction in the world around us.
We need all three types of worship. Some people focus primarily on speaking or singing praise to God.
Praise is good, but if all we do is praise God, without ever listening to what he says, we have to ask whether we believe the words we are saying.
If he is really all wise and all loving, then we need to be attentive to what he is telling us, because he is worth listening to.
Similarly, we cannot be all talk and no action.
Actions speak louder than words
as we connect with God our minds are renewed and we present ourselves to God to be used by him for his glory, that is our spiritual worship.
Because we believe that God is worthy of every praise, then we are willing to listen and to change the way we live in response to such a wonderful God.
We trust him and we seek him and we want to please him as much as we can.
Worship affects our behaviour and it forms us
as worship to the father is meant to be a response with all our entire being.
God initiates relationship by revealing himself to us.
Then we respond, and the response is what connects us.
The more we grasp his greatness, his power, his love, his character, the more we understand his worthiness, the better we can declare his worth.
Our heart expresses itself in words and songs; our mind is active when we want to learn what God wants us to do, and our bodies and strength are involved when we obey and when we serve.
God puts us in a community, he reveals himself through that community, and the together everyone responds to him, in declaring that he is worth all honour and praise.
Moreover, God promises that whenever we gather in Jesus’ name, he will be there and answers our prayers.
Close with this thought on spiritual formation
in Romans 12 paul writes this on spiritual formation
So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him.
Your offering is only for God and it is pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship.
Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking.
Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. (Romans 12:1, 2 NCV)
God has purpose for us and for our lives, He wants us to be changed and transformed into his image and to change the world around us.
I pray that while we are in these uncertain times, our focus will be upwards and outwards.
That we will be Connected heavenly and connected to the community around us.
Pray that God will reveal himself through us to a world that needs some hope and needs some help.
Look out for your neighbours and each others
